Tracy W. Hylton Sr. completed one year at West Virginia University before going into the army in 1943. He was in the 26th Anti-Aircraft Ordinance Company for the duration of World War II. Returning home to Wyoming County in 1946, he began working at Olgebay Norton Coal and Itmann Coal Company. Intent on forming his own company, Hylton started with donkeys and cars and later went to mining with conveyors. When faced without transportation to haul coal he brought small dump trucks to do his own hauling, and through those innovations Perry and Hylton. Inc. was formed later becoming a large and reputable strip mine operation in West Virginia. Hylton served as the 9th District Senator of Raleigh and Wyoming counties for eight years. He was also a member of the West Virginia Mining and Reclamation Association where he served as chairman. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors at Gulf National Bank and Raleigh County National Bank for several years. After some fifty-two years of dedication to the field with no desire to retire, he remains active in his coal companies overseeing Mingo County mining complex and Fayette County strip operation.
