Raymond E. Salvati began his career with Island Creek Coal Company as a trackman. He was promoted to superintendent over five mines. Salvati was a past president of the American Mining Congress and director of the National Association of Manufacturers. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of West Virginia University, and a former president. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Wheeling College in Wheeling, West Virginia, and a past president of the Lay Board of St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. He served as a director of the Norfolk and Western Railway Co., later retiring from the Board in 1971. He was an honorary director of the American Mining Congress. Salvati was elected to the Board of Elgin National Industries in November 1970. Salvati served as a director of the Federal Bank of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia, for a period of six years from 1958 to 1964. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers selected Salvati to receive the Erskine Ramsay Gold Medal Award in February 1960. This award was given for "his outstanding contributions and achievements in the development and application of modern technology in underground coal mining in the preparation of bituminous coal and for his many years of distinguished leadership within the industry." Salvati retired in 1964. He later died on November 22, 1982.
