Peter B. Lilly was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army following his graduation from U.S. Military Academy. Following his military service, Lilly decided while attending Harvard Business School to enter the coal industry, reflecting his West Virginia heritage. He worked from 1977 to 1980 for a management consulting firm in New York that focused on maintenance management systems in the underground coal mining industry. In 1980, he joined Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation as manager in maintenance planning. Subsequently, he started and managed the dual-seam underground Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois from 1983 to 1988. He also became certified in the state of Illinois as both mine manager and mine examiner. In 1991, Lilly joined Peabody Holding Company, Inc. as president of Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, headquartered in Charleston, West Virginia. Eastern Associated produced about 33 million tons per year of coal exclusively in West Virginia. In 1995, he was named president and chief operating officer of Peabody Holding Company, Inc. He was responsible for all North American operations including Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, Peabody Coal Company, Powder River Coal Company and Peabody Western Coal Company which collectively produced more than 150 million tons per year. In 1998, Lilly raised private equity capital to purchase Triton Coal Company with two mines in Wyoming, one operating and one under construction. As president and chief executive officer of Triton and Vulcan Coal Holdings, Lilly increased Triton's Powder River Basin production from 16 million to 43 million tons per year. The Triton mines were sold in 2002 at which time Lilly joined Consol Energy Inc. He became chief operating officer at Consol Energy in 2005, then president of the Coal Group of Consol Energy in 2007. Lilly was responsible for all aspects of Consol Energy's coal mining, marketing and transportation as well as the safety of its 7,500 employees until his retirement in 2009. Lilly is currently a director of Oxford Resource Partners, LP, member and past president of the King Coal Club, and member of the Old Timers Club. His prior professional affiliations include chairman, Penn Virginia Resources, LP, board member for Penn Virginia Corporation, Columbia Energy Resources, Inc., National Coal Association, American Mining Congress, Bituminous Coal Operators Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, World Coal Institute, and Waterways Council, Inc., chairman, West Virginia Coal Association, chairman of Safety Committee, National Mining Association, and member, Young Presidents' Organization.
