Paul Lang

Paul A. Lang is the chief executive officer and president of Arch Resources, Inc. As of 2023, Arch is a leading U.S. coal producer for the global steel industry serving customers worldwide. 

Lang joined Arch out of university in 1984 and spent most of his career at mining operations in Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky, Colorado, and Utah, finishing his direct operating career in 2005 as the president and general manager of Thunder Basin Coal Company in Wyoming. Prior to being elected CEO in 2020, Lang served as Arch’s president and chief operating officer. 

In addition to his responsibilities with Arch, he serves as a member of the executive committee of the National Mining Association and a member of the board of trustees at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Rolla). Lang was recently appointed to the Surface Transportation Board (STB) Rail Energy Transportation Advisory Committee (RETAC). 

Lang previously served on the management board of Knight Hawk Coal Company and is a former member of the board of Advanced Emissions Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADAES). He is a former chair of the University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources Council, and also served on the development board of the mining department of Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is a past commissioner of the Wyoming Healthcare Commission. 

Lang received a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology as well as an honorary professional degree from the same institution. He is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School; a registered licensed professional engineer in six states; and a past member of the Society of Mining Engineers’ Professional Registration Committee.
