Marshall Stuart Miller began his career in the Illinois oil and gas fields as a geophysical engineer with Schlumberger Well Services. He established Marshall Miller and Associates and embarked on an independent career, offering engineering, geological and geophysical services to the coal, oil, and gas industries in the Central Appalachians. With an advanced knowledge of coal geology and a specialization in the prediction of geological mining hazards in advance of mining, Miller was able to grow his company in the Appalachians where avoiding mining hazards had reached the highest of priorities among the coal industry. From this beginning, he continually embarked on a path of diversification, recruitment of professionals, and acquisition of smaller companies to eventually build a multi-service engineering, geological, and geophysical operation with a full staff of civil, mining, environmental, and petroleum engineers along with hydrological, computer processing, and communications specialists. Under his leadership, the company grew internationally with 10 offices in nine states and was listed among the top 500 Engineering Design Firms in the U.S. by Engineering News Record. The company's international activities are focused primarily in China, South America, and Canada. During the course of developing his business and conducting innovative research and exploration techniques, he has authored over 25 professional publications and was recognized in 1993 as a Regional Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. Magazine, Ernst and Young, and Merrill Lynch. In following years, he received: the Distinguished Professional Achievement Award from the West Virginia University Geology Department; both the Regional and National Distinguished Member Awards of the Society of Mining Engineers and served as a Selected Panelist and Outside Advisor to the U.S. Geological Survey.
