James R. Thomas II graduated from Culver Military Academy and joined the United States. Army in 1944-1946, which included assignments with the 13th and 82nd Airborne Divisions. After his service ended, he graduated from Cornell University. After graduating college, the majority of his professional life was devoted to Carbon Industries, Inc., where he served as treasurer, secretary, vice president and executive vice president prior to being elected president and chief executive officer, a position he served for the period 1974-1983. Thomas completed his career with Carbon Industries, Inc., by serving as chairman of the board during 1982-1983. Thomas served the West Virginia Coal Industry in numerous roles such as vice president, Kanawha Coal Operations Association, chairman, West Virginia Coal Association, and as a member of the board of the National Coal Association, the National Council of Coal Lessors, the Eastern Coal Transportation Conference, and the Southern Coal Producers Association. His career includes service on the Board of Directors of One Valley Bank, NA, Columbia Energy, Inc. and Shoney's Inc. Thomas has received numerous awards for his community and professional service which are highlighted by two honorary degrees: Doctor of Laws, University of Charleston and Doctor of Laws, West Virginia Wesleyan College.
