J. Brett Harvey started his career in 1979 with Kaiser Steel Company as a longwall supervisor in Utah. Throughout Harvey's career, he has held positions with several coal mines across the country. He is president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc. and chairman and chief executive officer of CNX Gas Corporation, a majority-owned subsidiary of CONSOL. Prior to joining CONSOL, Harvey was president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Energy Inc., a subsidiary of PacifiCorp, one of the country's largest electric utility companies. In addition, he served as vice president of PacifiCorp Fuels Department and president and chief executive officer of lnterwest Mining Company. Harvey is a member of the coal industry advisory board of the International Energy Agency. His membership includes: chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, Leadership Council of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Energy, Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority, National Coal Council, Waterways Council, Inc., The Conservation Fund and executive committee of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Harvey has also served as chairman (2002-2004) of the National Mining Association and as vice chairman of the World Coal Institute (2001-2003). In December 2005, Harvey was elected to the Board of Directors of Barrick Gold Corporation. In December 2007, Harvey was elected to the board of directors of Allegheny Technologies Incorporated. Harvey was presented with The Percy Nicholls Award in 2003. This award is jointly conferred by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for notable scientific or industrial achievement in the field of solid fuels.
