Herbert Jones Jr., enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from Princeton University in 1942. After the war, Jones was employed by Amherst Coal Company at Lundale, West Virginia, in the engineering department. He earned his Mine Foreman's and Registered Professional Mining Engineer's Certificate while working in the Buffalo Creek Division and in 1956 became division superintendent. In 1952, Jones was a member of the team to study German coal mines in Ruhr under the Marshall Plan. In 1960, Jones became vice president operations. Jones was president of the Logan Coal Operators Association, and director of the West Virginia Coal Association, serving five years as chairman of WVCA. In 1970, Jones became president of Amherst Coal Company, staying in that position until 1982 when he initiated a merger plan with Diamond Shamrock. Since then, he has been associated with Port Amherst Ltd., a waterways transportation and construction company. Jones served as director and chairman of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railroad. Jones has served as a member and chairman of the West Virginia Air Pollution Control Commission for several years. In 1972 he became a member of the West Virginia Graduate College Advisory Board, now Marshall University Graduate College, and was chairman until 1983.
