George J. Schuller Jr. graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor of science in engineering degree and later graduated with a master of business administration from the University of Charleston. Schuller was born in Ellwood City, PA, where mining and steel were a part of his everyday life. While attending WVU, Schuller worked his summers at Marrowbone Development in Naugatuck, West Virginia, and co-op employee with Peabody Coal in southern West Virginia. Upon graduation, he moved to Charleston, WV, for the next 14 years, working in roles of advancing responsibilities including: engineer, general labor foreman, shift mine manager, mine manager, superintendent, to superintendent over multiple operations sites. Schuller has more than three decades of experience in senior management roles in both surface and underground mining operations, beginning his career as an underground laborer in Southern West Virginia. Schuller joined Compass Minerals as chief operations officer in September 2019. In this role, he is responsible for managing global operations, environmental health and safety, along with technical services across the company. Prior to joining Compass Minerals, he served as president of Peabody Australia. His experience also includes global roles in continuous improvement and technical services where he integrated many emerging technologies from markets such as South America and the Asia Pacific into mining practices. Throughout his career, Schuller has led many transformational business initiatives to achieve organizational efficiencies and operational excellence, including the implementation of SafeStart® to embed a safety-first culture at Compass Minerals and Peabody. He also successfully executed the Project Excellence drive to achieve a $900M reduction in cost and uplift in productivity across the Australian operations of Peabody. In addition to his career in mining, Schuller has held professional memberships and board positions with numerous organizations, such as chairman of the board for Middlemount Coal, board member of Minerals Council of Australia and Queensland Resources Council, chair of the COAL21 Fund, director of Australian Coal Association, president of National Mine Rescue Association, board member of Kentucky Mine Institute, Member of King Coal & Old-timers, and a proud lifetime member of WVU Alumni Association, to name a few. Schuller holds an honorary Doctorate in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University for his contributions to the mining industry.
