Fielden B. "Fil" Nutter, began his career at age 16 as a laborer on a construction job in Dublin, Virginia. He started an operating engineer in the construction of air bases and support facilities in Trinidad and Brazil for the United States Army Air Corps in 1941. He was later honorably discharged in 1945. In 1950, he became general manager of Vecellio and Grogan, Inc., of Beckley, West Virginia. During this time, almost 100 percent of their heavy earth-moving equipment was committed to surface mining in Fayette and Mercer Counties. In 1956, Nutter became vice-president and general manager of Cecil I. Walker Machinery Company of Charleston, West Virginia, a Caterpillar equipment distributor. In 1964, Nutter founded and became president and CEO of Mynu Coals, Inc. and Hobet Mining and Construction Company, Inc. of Charleston. West Virginia. During this period, Nutter developed a new method of controlling some of the environmental aspects of surface mining which resulted in the elimination of highwalls and the prevention of overburden discharge over the out slopes. Nutter served on various boards and committees such as DrilTech, Inc., Board of Directors of Wendy's International of Dublin, Ohio, Board of Directors of the Mining and Reclamation Council of America, a national organization, located in Washington, DC. as well as a founding member of the West Virginia Mining and Reclamation Association. Nutter was founder and co-owner of Marshfork Coal Company from 1988-1990. He was also founder and developer of Fox Chase, a six-hundred-acre superior residential area overlooking Charleston.
