Elmo J. Hurst graduated from West Virginia University and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953. After leaving the Navy in 1957, Hurst joined Winding Gulf Coal Company at Tams, West Virginia as assistant chief engineer and assistant to the vice president. He joined the J.O. Lively Company and Lively Manufacturing and Equipment Company as vice president and general manager, a company designing and building coal preparation plants. When the Lively Companies were merged into Elgin National Industries in 1972, he became president of both. In 1972 he was named executive vice president and director of Elgin and in 1986 became president. Soon after retiring from Elgin in 1988, he purchased controlling interest in the Miller Bearing Company, Inc. and Almega/Tru-Flex, Inc. and became chairman and CEO of both companies. He is also chairman and CEO of Mountain State Home Health Care, Inc., Your Choice Home Care and AmeriCare Management Services, lnc. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of Old Florida Bank, Fort Myers, Florida, CCC lnc., San Antonio, Texas, United Mine Workers 1985 Construction Worker's Benefit Trust, Washington, DC, and the 1978 retired Construction Worker's Benefit, Washington, DC. Hurst served on the Board of Directors of the WVU Foundation for 20 years and served a two-year term as its chairman. He also served the university as a member of the Statler College Visiting Committee, the former College of Mineral and Energy Resources Advisory Committee, Vice Chair of The Campaign for WVU, a member of the Building Greatness Campaign Committee and member of the Executive Council of the Alumni Association.
