Edwin P. (Pat) Brady, raised in Clarksburg, WV, began his coal mining career early by assisting his father in the family's mining contractor and explosives distribution business. After graduating from Roosevelt Wilson High School in 1971, he enrolled in West Virginia University's Mining Engineering program with support from The Central West Virginia Mining Institute.
Following his freshman year and a summer work program, he was selected for a Cooperative Education program with the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program allowed him to alternate between school and work with the Federal Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration, which later became the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
After earning his degree from WVU, Brady joined the Bureau of Mines, where he worked in various technical groups and became an active member of the agency's Mine Rescue Team. His first mine rescue and recovery event was at Consol's Number 9 mine. He later led the accident investigation of the Quecreek Mine inundation and contributed to recovery efforts at the Wilberg Mine in Utah. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the Coal Mine Rescue Hall of Fame in 1989.
Brady advanced in his career, serving as a Field Office Supervisor in Clarksburg, WV, before being promoted to assistant district manager for technical programs. In 1998, he became district manager in Mt. Hope, WV. After nearly 35 years of service, he retired in August 2007 as the Superintendent of The National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley, WV. His tenure in the Federal Government provided him with opportunities to address mine health, safety, and training issues both in the U.S. and internationally, working with countries such as Russia, China, Japan, and Colombia.
In September 2007, Brady joined Murray Energy Corporation, where he assisted mining operations in Utah, Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio. His expertise played a key role in managing regulatory matters, safety concerns, and training. In December 2013, following Murray Energy Corporation's acquisition of CONSOL Energy Inc.'s. Consolidation Coal Company, Brady became the corporate director of safety. He retained that position until September 2020, when Murray Energy transitioned its assets to American Consolidated Natural Resources, Inc. through a bankruptcy sale. He currently provides safety and health leadership for American Consolidated Natural Resources, Inc. and for Foresight Energy.
