Edward A. “Eddie” Asbury was born and grew up in Anawalt, West Virginia. At the age of 17, with his mother’s permission, he joined the United States Army. He turned 18 years old on a plane taking him to combat duty in Vietnam. While in Vietnam he received several awards including the Bronze Star for performing a heroic and/or meritorious deed in armed combat.
After his honorary discharge from the U.S. Military, he went to work for Consolidation Coal Company at their Jenkinjones Mine. With the support of CONSOL, he earned his Mine Foreman certification. After several years of working various jobs he “bought a mine” from Kenny Childers for $10,000. He started his first company, Ebony Coal Company, Inc.
Next, he created C & A Coal Company, Inc. and Eddie started to acquire coal properties through leases, sub-leases or “anyway he could.” He acquired significant reserves of Sewell Coal in April of 2007. In April of the following year, he purchased the Cannelton Preparation Plant located at Superior, West Virginia. Immediately upon the purchase of the plant, Eddie began the design and construction of a new more modern plant right beside the existing plant. The new plant contains the latest technology and increased capacity. These acquisitions allow Eddie to produce and process his own coal, while expanding access to more markets.
Asbury owns and operates several shops to service and maintain his equipment. He has a rebuild shop for his electrical motors and transformers, along with shops for his other equipment. He continues to acquire coal property, develop mines and expand his operations. As of 2023, he has two highwall miners ready to go into production.
In conjunction with Eddie’s passion for coal, he continues to be active in politics—supporting measures and candidates that are good for the country, the state of West Virginia, McDowell County and coal.
