Doug Hardman graduated from Marshall University in 1970 with a bachelor of engineering science degree. While at Marshall University, Hardman worked as draftsman at J. H. Fletcher & Co. Following graduation, Hardman spent two years on active duty in the United States Army as a mechanical maintenance officer. He returned to J. H. Fletcher as a design engineer and MSHA coordinator following his discharge from the U.S. Army. He later received his MBA in 1976 from Marshall University and became a registered professional engineer in West Virginia. Hardman spent his entire career at J. H. Fletcher, becoming vice president, general manager and COO in 1999. He later was announced president in 2001 and CEO in 2010. He has served on many boards throughout his career including the National Mining Association Board from 1998-2014 and promoted to chairman of the manufacturers and services division of NMA from 2010-2014. He was responsible for the technical program as co-chairman of MINEXPO in 2004, 2008 and 2016. He served as a member of SME, National Society of Professional Engineers, West Virginia Coal Mining Institute and the King Coal Club. Hardman was a member of the Illinois Mining Institute, the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum. In 2012, Hardman was presented with a Distinguished Alumni award by Marshall University's College of Engineering. In the Huntington community, Hardman served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, Huntington Area Development Council, Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation, and Marshal University Alumni Association. He also served as chairman of the engineering advisory board at Marshall University and served as a commissioner on the West Virginia Governor's Judicial Vacancy Advisory Commission. Hardman retired in 2012 and remained on the board of directors at J. H. Fletcher as vice chairman until 2021.
