Daniel D. "Danny" Smith's distinguished career with Norfolk Southern extended for more than 30 years until he retired in 2013 as senior vice president of energy and properties for Norfolk Southern Corporation. He was responsible for all industrial development along Norfolk Southern rail lines, and president of Pocahontas Land Corporation from 1995 to 2013. Prior to becoming president, Smith held several positions with Pocahontas Land Corporation. Smith is a professional mining engineer licensed to practice in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He is a member of the board of Blackhawk Mining, LLC and a former member of the board of Corsa Coal Corporation, a small Canadian public company that produces coal from low volatile metallurgical mines in southwestern Pennsylvania and thermal/industrial mines in northeastern Tennessee. He has served on several professional boards, including the American Coal Council, National Coal Council, West Virginia Coal Association and Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority and continues to serve on the advisory board of the Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research.
