C.E. "Jim" Compton is the founder of FIVE-J Energy, Inc., the parent company of Grafton Coal Company in Bridgeport, WV. Compton has been recognized by many groups for his extensive accomplishments and his philanthropic support of many organizations and causes both within the state of West Virginia as well as nationwide. Compton's company was the first to use the block-cut method of mining. This concept has been responsible for the improvement of thousands of acres of surface mined land throughout West Virginia. He funded the Compton Chair of Nutrition Research at West Virginia University School of Medicine. In 1987, Compton provided the leadership and support to establish a public/private partnership health education program in Harrison County Schools in cooperation with Grafton Coal Company. Compton later co-chaired the Governor's Task Force on School Health in 1990. In 1993, Compton was honored for exemplary leadership and vision by the Centers for Disease Control at the premiere of the CDC produced film on the West Virginia Healthy Schools Program. Grafton Coal Company was awarded the AML North Award in 1994 by the West Virginia Mining and Reclamation Association for work in Randolph County in which it sealed several abandoned underground mine openings and its pioneering work in restoration of two wetlands to control acid mine drainage.
