B.R. "Bobby" Brown finished a four-year tour of duty with the United States Air Force in northern Europe when he began his career. In 1957, Brown joined the Production Department of Conoco, Inc. in Houston, Texas. Throughout the years, Brown advanced through a succession of production and management positions - he was named vice president of Conoco in 1974 and advanced to senior vice-president-personnel in 1975. In 1977, Brown joined Consolidation Coal Company as executive vice president. During the 1980s, Brown assumed leadership of several other DuPont subsidiaries. He was elected president of Remington Arms Company, Inc. and also was named to head DuPont's Powder Metal and Metal Injection Molding Businesses. Brown was elected in January 1992 as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc. and CONSOL Inc. Brown was chairman of the National Coal Association from 1986 to 1988. He served as chairman for several organizations including The Center for Energy and Economic Development, Coal Industry Advisory Board of the International Energy Agency, the CIAB Global Climate Committee, American Coal Foundation, Association for the Development of Inland Navigation in America's Ohio Valley and National Coal Council.
