Andrew B. Jordan began his career with Hawks Nest Mining Company. His duties at Hawks Nest initially included mine design, permitting, surveying and water monitoring and compliance. Hawks Nest was sold in 1985 to Imperial Pacific Investments and the emphasis changed from underground mining to surface mining. Jordan helped develop surface mine plans, highwall miner plans, haul road plans and then went into the field to oversee the construction of ponds, valley fills, haul roads and surface mines. He later worked as a surface mine foreman and ran one of the surface mines. In 1992, Jordan left Cyprus Minerals to start his own dream by forming Pritchard Mining, and in the fall of 1992, a small surface mine at the top of Lens Creek Mountain was started with eight employees. In 2001, Jordan and two partners bought the Kanawha River loading facility at Crown Hill, West Virginia, and adjacent properties. Jordan also owns Long Flame Coal Corporation, a contract mining company that has mined coal for Arch Coal, the Hylton Family and Coal River Energy. Jordan has always believed in mining the land with a minimal impact and providing for long-term beneficial uses in his restoration and reclamation. Most of his operations had pre-law conditions that he cleaned up during the mining process. His operations have received numerous state reclamation awards and a national award from the United States Department of Interior for his work on steep slope conditions. Millions of trees native to West Virginia have been planted on his reclaimed mine sites. In giving back to the community, Jordan has built the Friends of Coal Soccer Fields at Trace Fork with Ralph Ballard, The Frances P. Jordon Driving Range at Coonskin Park, the football fields and locker rooms at George Washington High School, the football and soccer fields at John Adams Middle School, The Varsity Golf Center at Penn State, scoreboards and uniforms for numerous Little League teams up and down the Kanawha Valley and many more civic projects throughout Boone and Kanawha counties.
