Allen S. Pack served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. Following his service in the Marine Corps, he returned to Buckeye Coal and Coke at Stephenson as an outside foreman. Pack has a long and varied career in the coal industry that continued with employment as superintendent with Buckeye Coal and Coke Company and Page Coal and Coke Company. He was employed by Island Creek Coal Company for 17 years. Pack has made major contributions to the United States coal industry through leadership as chairman and director of the West Virginia Coal Association, Bituminous Coal Operators Association, the National Coal Association and the Kanawha Coal Operators Association. Pack was a member of the 1974 negotiating team for the Bituminous Coal Operators Association Wage Agreement with the United Mine Workers of America. He also served as chairman and member of the WVU Benjamin M. Statler College Engineering and Mineral Resources visiting committee.
